Photography and Video Policy

In keeping with its mission to advance teaching, learning and research by providing access to our collections, services, spaces and expertise, the University of Alberta Library is committed to providing an environment that is conducive to individual and collaborative study and research, and protects the privacy of our user community.

The following policy governs the taking of photos and videos in public and restricted spaces at all U of A Library locations, as well as their use.

U of A Library Photography/Videography Rules

The policy divides rules into three categories: Permitted with Consent, Permitted with No Consent, and Not Permitted.

Permitted - Consent Required

Permitted - No Consent Required

  • Personal Use: Photos and videos taken by individuals, such as informal graduation photos, are allowed as long as they are not disruptive and are solely for personal use.
  • Public Events: Photos and videos of U of A Library public events and programs are permitted for educational, editorial, promotional, and marketing purposes. The Library staff must provide a minimum of 24 hours advance notice via signage in the event areas.

Not Permitted

  • Organized Shoots: Organized, posed group photos (like wedding pictures) and staged film shoots are not allowed.
  • Disruptive Activity: Any photo/video activity that blocks building entrances, passages, or staircases, or that requires the use of special lighting or reflectors is forbidden.
  • Restricted Areas: Unauthorized photos and/or videos of U of A Library staff offices or processing/storage areas are not permitted.
  • News/Commercial: Requests from news media must go through University of Alberta Media Relations, and requests for commercial photography/videography require permission, see Requests for third-party filming on University of Alberta campuses
